When I saw your Q, it got me thinking and I wondered if balsa could be bent to the required shape with the aid of steam,like many other woods can.
I Googled the words 'bending balsa' (all the web) and got about 10 results, the 2nd one on the list recomended soaking in 'WINDEX' hope this helps.
