My advice on room colours is to use something muted and not to go for anything garish or eyecatching. The best test? Ask guests a couple of days later what colour the walls were. If they can't remember - that's fine! It means you've chosen colours that can be lived with for ages, and that you're not going to want to change after a couple of months because you've got tired of them. There's a lot to be said for magnolia and its close relatives!
"Expert tv designer advice" is the clue to your question. Don't be influenced by these "experts", go with what you feel is right and comfortable for you to live with. I agree with previous post about pale pastels and magnolia but use whatever colours you like with fixtures and fittings that are practicable and easy to maintain.

For kitchens I really like the pale shaker style kitchens with black granite worktops, something like this:

For bathrooms, pale or neutrals are nice, or white wall and floor tiles, brightened up by coloured towels.

I always find interior magazines good, my bedroom is based on a picture in a magazine, and my bathroom is based on a picture on the dulux website!

Yes, I'd agree with pale colours on the walls & adding colour with 'moveable' items. You can always change the look from season to season with inexpensive accessories.
Bear in mind that this is the lightest time of the year (ahem, well maybe not at the moment with this awful weather!) & what may seem like a nice bright kitchen now might be like a cave in winter if you used dark shades on the walls.
Even when choosing light colours, tester pots are always a good idea too...what I thought was a pale lemon to brighten up my spare room turned out to be a jaundice yellow. :o(

hope you'll be very happy in your new home! :o)

Try having a look through, "Living Etc" or "4homes" magazines. They have lots of good ideas and pictures of contemporary rooms/homes. As well as illustrating what might look good in your bathroom and kitchen they'll give you ideas on accessorising and 'dressing' the room, to add colour and interest.
