we've just moved into a new house which has a small pond in it (8ft x 5ft). the pond has loads of frog spawn in it which is near to hatching. the problem is that the pond is also chocker-block with weed and algae. is there any way to get rid of the weed and algae without killing too many tadpoles? any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

Just be patient, it won't be too long before the taddies have turned into froglets and you can make a start. When you do decide to clear the algae and weed leave it on the side of the pond to let any trapped pondlife escape back into the water. I find an old toilet brush excellent for removing blanket weed, just wind it round!
I think there are tesco value line toilet brushes, there's a fascinating piece of information for you (if you don't have an old toilet brush or don't want to put various diseases into your pond).
I know it looks ugly stevie, but your little tadpoles will soon be need a lot of this weed and algae to feed on so if you remove too much there won't be enough food in the pond to support them. Just remove a little weed and possibly some of the newer frogspawn if it hasn'[t started to disintegrate yet to try and maintain a balance and have a more thorough clearing session around the end of June when you see the little froglets getting ready to leave the pond. I assume some of the weed will be this fleece-like green blanket weed which can be removed by twirling it round a long spikey twig.
