Vacuum cleaner for carpets and laminate floors

Can anyone recommend a good cleaner for a house with 2 carpetted rooms and 2 rooms with laminate flooring? Our Hoover is on its last legs and seems a bit cumbersome to me. Thansk in advance.

Nice coincidence, i've just got this months 'Which' magazine, and according to them there are only two to consider for both the carpet and Laminates, and they are the Miele and Bosch cylinders, no other make came close in the tests, we have a Miele, and you won't get better, a quiet motor too.

We have a Bosch Ergomaxx cylinder and it is great for carpets and laminate. Its not easy to find in shops though, we bought ours on the net.
