Joseph Swan from Sunderland, working in Newcastle upon Tyne made a working light bulb in 1860, but it had to wait until a better method of producing a vacuum was developed. In 1878 Swan started to manufacture his improved version, and the Americam Edison followed Swan's developments the following year, with his full scale production starting in 1880.
