Very Lightweight Duvet

I need to buy a new duvet to for a 4ft bed..i.e.small double..

I dislike the weight as it hangs down the sides of the bed.

Does anyone have knowledge of what took out for that will be light cover but warm enough for chilly nights.

We bought a cheap and cheerful king-size summer quilt from Argos for the princely sum of £13.00 and it's been great during the Scottish summer, known to soft southerners as autumn. :-)

I daresay the smaller one would be even cheaper.

Hi TOB, I just bought a new duvet, my bed about same size as yours, I got the 15 tog for the winter, but if that is too heavy for you a 13.5tog is good

I always buy duvets that can be split into two weights. Not sure if you can buy duvets specifically for 4 ft beds. I always used single size duvet on my 4 ft

A summer duvet is usually about 4-7 Togs

Autumn 8-14 Togs

Winter 14-20 Togs (often by combining summer and autumn duvets with poppers)

Hmmmm.....Dave's a fan of the pop together ones. If funds run to it, Thisoldbird have a look at Devon Duvets. I love them for comfort, weight and temperature control.

Truth is that really light weight duvets are meant for summer nights and are unlikely to be warm enough for a cool bedroom in winter.
The warmest lightweight duvet is likely to be goose down...which are expensive.

We have a 1 tog, a 1.5 tog, a 4.5 tog, a 7 tog, a 10 tog and a 13.5 tog, we haven’t used the 13.5 for years. All are from Dunelm and cost very little.
I suggest you buy a 4.5 and see how you go on with it, you can always change to a thicker one as autumn goes chillier. Or throw a light fleece blanket on top.

I have Fogarty all wool, all seasons duvet which is lightweight but warm during winter. Unlike other 'all season' duvets this is one duvet that is used all year

I don't have a duvet I hate the damn things.
One cotton blanket and a bedspread do me. Can't be faffing about with a duvet.

I use a 4.5 all year round. Combined with a throw...or 2...plus an over mattress electric blanket, I'm cosy. I used to have a much heavier one...either 10 or 13.5, and I found it to be way too heavy. My bedroom is unheated.

I was advised on here to go for wool - bought it and never again. Far too heavy for me to get a duvet cover on.

Neighbour does it. I am too thinking of a lightweight but warm TOG next time which will be pretty soon.

Funny how different people like different duvet weights. I like one as heavy as possible in the winter, which I think is a throwback to growing up in a freezing tenement flat and wanting to get buried under the covers. I might even be candidate for one of those weighted blankets you can buy, which are said to help with insomnia/stress.

We are indeed different, GG. I can’t bear weight. Reminds me of Granny’s Mayo cottage. Not enough blankets for all so it was coats…..lots of heavy coats pinning us kids to the bed. Never heard of a weighted blanket. Will look and most likely dismiss. :-)

We have a 4.5 tog for most of the year and add a light throw over when it gets cooler. Come January I'll swap it for the 10.5 tog which is plenty warm enough for us in our unheated winter bedroom. We could snap the two together if needbe and have 15 tog but we've never needed to.

A standard double will hang over the sides of your 4ft bed. Look for a small double which is probably easier found online than in the stores. Some info on the sizing here.

If you buy a single size duvet it will not hang down but will cover the 4ft bed. I always get Hungarian Goose Down duvets as they are the lightest in weight and also the warmest. I use the lowest TOG all year round and the 10.5 TOG is almost too warm.
