Apart from shutting the door or getting a beaded type curtain, how can I stop those pesky flies from coming into my kitchen and buzzing around the food? Is there anything smelly I can maybe put on the floor by the door??

Well I know what works for watermelon.
Apparently flies don't like the smell of mint - maybe buy a mint plant.
Nothing you can do to stop them, nasty things.

I've got an ultra violet zapper just inside my back door. It is strangely pleasing when it fries the little sods.
Citronella candles keep mozzies away that could work or fly paper.
We have a string curtain on the back door. We spray that and our window frames with Skin so Soft. They seem to hate that. If some manage to get through we give them a squirt to slow them down so we can vacuum them. Works well and our house smells quite nice in the summer. :-)
It's about time screen-doors and windows became standard features in the UK and, for Gness, Ireland.
^ yes, we are so backward here.
Sanmac. When we moved to Canada we had a screen door on the large patio windows. MrG arrived home from work...marching sprightly as he did and swinging his briefcase. Didn't notice the screen door. We had the imprint of his body and briefcase in the screen for the rest of our stay.
But yes, you're right. They are a brilliant idea.
Yes, Gness, they certainly keep the pesky critters out. Living on the 11th floor it amazes me that flies fly that high.
