Against my better judgment, I used an extension lead without fully uncoiling the cable (wrong, I know) but how can I get it up n'running safely again?

Uncoil it fully - inspect for any burning/melting - then press the reset button on the reel (if there is one) and check/replace the fuse in the plug.

depends what has failed - fuse / trip switch / WHY.
Isn't there a red trip button on it? If so, just press it.
I never unroll the cable completely.

If there is any sign of melting it is stuffed.
Has it not just tripped a circuit on your consumer unit (fuse board)?

Thanks all, I did all the checks, and it turned out to be the plug fuse
