I’m running a large metal desk fan in my room which has been fine for months. For some reason it keeps stopping for a few seconds and starting up again. I’ve tried it in two different plug sockets and the same thing happens. Any ideas?

I'd guess a loose connection inside the fan. The connection will be made and broken, when it stops vibrations in the room can cause the fan to start again.
Only suggestions, but either its overheating or a loose connection in the wiring somewhere, or brushes burnt out on motor. Really impossible to say without "eye balling" it. Do you know anyone that owns a multi-meter that can check it out for you?
How old is fan, you could take it back to the retailer if under a year old if you have receipt and ask for a replacement.
Have you had it "oscillating" or fixed in one direction. If the former, I'd suspect that the wiring may have become damaged with the constant flexing.
