Four months ago, we moved into a new build house but have never had a bill for Gas or Electric. we have contacted SP several times but they keep asking for our account number and of course, we do not have one! We are both mid seventies and the worry about the bills we are running up is very upsetting. Any advice please?

I'm no expert, but, since you have informed them, I'd put the money in a savings account and wait for them to wake up, were I you. May be wise to inform them via recorded delivery first though, as proof.
The first thing you need to do when you move into any house (whether it's a new build or not) is to sign up with an energy supplier. Have you actually done so? If so, are you sure that it's Scottish Power that you signed up with (and not, say, Scottish & Southern Electricity or any one of the dozens of other companies you could have chosen).
When you told them you were moving, and gave them your new address, did you tell them the date you were moving in?
There is no rule to say that new build properties in a certain area will be supplied by a certain provider - for example an energy supplier may have struck a deal with a property developer to initially supply all the houses on a new build plot. You can try contacting the sales office if there is one or the estate agent to try and find out who the supplier might be. You could also ask other neighbours who may have moved in to the area. If you read the meter(s) when you moved in - all well and good. It might be an idea to also read them each month and note the values /numbers. I agree that you should put money aside to pay when the bill does arrive and that you should be proactive in finding out. You can also try this link which may provide some more useful information:-

Hi lyn. Can you tell us why you are so sure it's Scottish Power? And maybe they want a meter number not an account number?
Have you asked to speak to a manager or written to them ? I am puzzled why you say SP as you dont who the energy supplier for this address is ? Was SP your previous supplier ? In this case I should quote your previous account number and say you want to be moved to this new address.

The developer told us it was SP. However, the builder says its a company called Our Power and they are dealing with it. Thanks for all answers.
