I moved into this house 3 years ago and up until now I've had no spiders at all in the house in this August/September period, for which I have been really grateful, as I really don't like them. But suddenly I've got some monsters in the house. The other evening I had 3 in the living room - 2 average size, and one monster. The big one was being attacked by a smaller one, at least that's what it looked like. Is the reason they're back this year because I'm not cleaning enough? Is there anything I can do to discourage them? I know they do a lot of good, but the big ones are so scary. Can anyone help this gibbering arachnaphobe please?

My fear was soon gone when my dter broke her ankle evicting a spider above my bed. Ive been at war with spiders ever since !
You can buy a device that you plug into an electric socket that emits a frequency they cannot tolerate. It works.

Thanks again everyone. Unfortunately there was another one last night, a strange brown colour, upstairs, heading for the bedroom, with an introduction letter from Ryzen..........!
I normally don't worry about 'daddy long legs' etc. but the spiders invading my bedroom lately are far bigger bodied and much hairier legs and jump about 6 inches, and with eight legs they run much faster than me! I saw the last one come out of the air vent which I will now get someone to block for me (I cannot reach it). I cant bear the thought of one crawling around my head while I am asleep!
The next one you see, jump on, firmly grab a handful of bristles with one hand, raise your other hand above your head and rodeo it out the front door.
Er, would you like to demonstrate that for me please?
I hate them. Suck 'em up the hoover.
Send them round to me, I love 'em:-)
I really don't mind them, I have three of the gangly ones hanging about (Literally) but one of the meat sized ones scuttled under my bed and also another one went investigating behind my TV, I can't deny though they both did make me jump.
Ladybirder, Oh, teach me to love them... please. How do you do that? I would love to love them ... but I don't. I absolutely hate them - and I hate hating them!
I'm not too bad with invaders that crawl but things that fly and buzz round freak me out totally.

I'm not a great fan, if I see one on/within 4' of the floor, I point it out to Bruno who thinks they are full of Protein, Roger couldn't give a Monkeys.
I wish I could do that Naomi but I doubt it. As you will know, you were born fearing two things, loud noises and falling. All other fears are learned, most of them in the first six years of your life. Did your mother scream at the sight of a spider or did someone you know? I have no fear of them at all. I find beauty in the wonderful webs they weave, I hate dirty flies and spiders kill them which is good and I know they won't hurt me. Unlike wretched wasps and mosquitoes. I have about 12 mozzie bites all over me at the moment itching like crazy. So I hate mozzies and wasps. I don't understand why you are frightened of spiders, they are not really interested in you. They don't hurt you. If I see a spider run under the bed I'll ignore it, but if I know there is a mozzie in the room I won't rest until it's dead because I know it will get me:-(
A friend of mine who was terrified of them would make her husband stop what he was doing and get rid of it. If he wasn't in she would run to a neighbour to do it and if he wasn't in she would wait outside her house until her husband came home. Err you don't live up north do you??
For me it was the fact that I was watching something scary as I often do and they appeared out of nowhere.
start by flicking mini spiders & work up to large. That will break your fear cos they will sense your power ;)
^^ sense your power & avoid you
Ladybirder, I can watch them in awe when they’re spinning webs in the garden, but in the house – no. I have no problem catching bees or wasps or anything else and ejecting them, but even though I know spiders won’t hurt me, I simply cannot go anywhere near them in the house. Completely irrational!! My mother had no problem with them. She’d pick them up in a cloth and put them out so where my fear came from I have no idea. I did have one that kept popping out from under a skirting and then running back. I tried really hard to leave him to his own business. In an effort to regard him as a ‘pet’ I even gave him a name. As time went on he seemed to be growing bigger, so with the aid of the hoover, sadly his fate was eventually sealed. I read somewhere that they don’t have a brain in the true sense but work on a kind of nervous system. I think that made them seem even less attractive – if that’s possible.

No, I don’t live up north.
The bit about the nervous system rings a bell with me. When my children were small, we spied a large hairy black spider under the television. As they moved forwards to get a better look as it was the biggest they had ever seen, the spider moved backwards. As soon as they moved away again it moved forwards. This carried on until either the children or the spider got fed up. We remember it as having big eyes and seemed to be watching us. I think the dog ate it in the end.
Perhaps a bit of hypnotherapy might help you Naomi. I saw a lady on the TV being hypnotised to cure her of her fear of spiders and it worked.
I can't say I like them either but don't worry me as much as they used to. I would never kill one.
