We have lived in this house for twenty four years and the bedroom carpets are the original ones, as laid by the house builders. They are in need of replacement but the thought of moving all the bedroom furniture is daunting and it keeps putting me off having it done.

We have four bedrooms and all of them need doing. Any tips for making it a less daunting prospect? Each one done separately, with furnishings moved into another room? Oh.........the thought of it puts me off........help!

Buy another house? ;o)
We are in the same situation. It depends partly on whether you are having the same carpet in every room.

Good idea, Jo! Will this house sell with wavy bedroom carpets though?
Question Author
I would have the same throughout, Prudie. I like things to match.
Of course it will, Tilly...just call them original features :)

Jo, you always have the best answers!
It is just as difficult as you imagine.

Perhaps have two done at a time, and get all young fit family members on standby to move stuff around.

Oh, and start off by having a massive, ruthless clearout session.
Question Author
The clear out session is a good idea, Hoppy. Anyone want any books?
Yes please!
I've dealt with the same problem when helping a friend to re-carpet a room.

It's dead easy:

Simply move all of the bedroom furniture clear from one wall by around 1.5m. Then cut a strip, roughly 1m wide off the carpet, roll it up and bin it. Then move the furniture a bit so that you can access the next 1m wide strip of carpet and cut it off. Repeat as necessary, removing the carpet strip-by-strip. (If required, remove the carpet grippers around the edge of the room whenever you find it convenient to do so during the step-by-step cutting-up process).

You'll obviously end up with a strip of bare boards, free from the clutter of any furniture, where you removed the final strip of carpet. So that's where you start laying your new carpet TILES (which are a zillion times easier to lay than full-size carpets). That's your solution!

I recently had all my rooms decorated.
I emptied each room completely of furniture.
I used "furniture gliders" for heavy wardrobe moving etc.
I found them to be be a great help.
They made things much easier.
They can be found on Amazon and eBay etc.
Thanks pete I'll tell that to my OH as I have fallen in love with a bedroom carpet and he says we'll never move the wardrobe so can't have it.
Hello, Prudie,
I am sure your OH knows best!
But, I am no Spring chicken and moved an ancient heavy wardrobe fairly easily with "furniture gliders", and also bookcases and a washing machine.
They certainly were a big help to me.
Have a browse on Amazon and you will find them, and reviews on them.
20 years ?
Question Author
Pete, where did you put the furniture when you emptied all the rooms?
Question Author
So, carpet tiles then, Chris?
Question Author
Anne? Twenty years?.............who are you talking to?
First, I had a clear out.
Hired a Man and Van to dump stuff.
Then, did one room at a time.
I emptied what furniture was in it, into the next room.
The empty room still had fitted carpets which were covered before decoration.
It worked out quite well.
Arrange with the carpet fitter to do over a few days so it's easier to move stuff about.
I associate carpet tiles with heavy wear areas and so rather heavy and rough themselves. Not soft enough for a bedroom.
