cleaning a sofa

Hi,

I have a Klippan Ikea sofa - the cover is 100% cotton - it has some water marks etc on it - an ideas for the best way to clean it so these no longer show?  I have tried some of the upholstery cleaners but they don't seem to work particularly well.
