Unsightly lawn....

my lawn is smothered with "flea darts". How do I eradicate or minimise this?

I think paulnw means 'wild barley' (image).  If so, I know of no selective weedkiller for this grass, (that doesn't mean there isn't one) so you may have to start over agin with a fresh lawn.

P.S.
I suspect that you (paulnw) live in the south of England.  One solution would be to move up to Scotland - we hardly ever see that grass here in Fife.
