When is the best time of year to cut back a beech hedge?

According to one of my gardening bibles it's late summer.  It feels like summer's already gone today!
I wouldn't cut it after September as any pruning cuts will not heal in time for winter.  Larger cuts can always be sealed with a sealing wax.
