We have a beech 'hedge' and the bottom of our garden that the previous owners of the house have just let go and it is now are very tall trees and blocks a lot of light from the house, if there any way to get rid of these trees other than a tree surgeon.

hire a chain saw !!
Beech hedges are fantastic, wish I had one. Why don't you just get it sorted and lowered if it's blocking light?

The only reason we don't want to just trim it down, it seems to grow almost as we look at it and we think we will be back to square one in no time at all.
We used to have a large copper beech hedge when I was a child - my father used to manually clip it down every five years or so to a manageable height, about 6 ft high. Can't you do that (or get someone to do it for you)?

Thanks for all the answers I am grateful for the ideas.
Have you tried hedgelaying? You cut the base until you can bend it down and weave it around stakes about 1 metre apart. em down on top f one another and tidy up the sides. It always looks as though it won't survive but then always does and tends to grow slower and soon looks OK
