Do you reckon it'll be ok to use to makeover a sideboard (wood veneer)? I can't get the colour I want in a decorative paint range but I think I can from one of those car spray cans that they sell in Halfords and the like.

Thanks for any answers. :)

I'd give it a go, rocky, but then I'll try anything. When I need to dye shoes for my wedding, I couldn't get the colour I wanted anywhere in shoe dye - I went to Halfords - brilliant result!

I'm a 'give it a go' type as well but though I'd ask just incase someone shouted Noooo, you'll melt the wood, or something like that :)

Did you use car spray on the shoes?

I want a champagne gold colour for the sideboard, I think it'll go really well in the living room.
Yep Rocky, give it a go - I've done wooden shelves with aluminium blue before and it looked great.
Have a look at this link for inspiration :-)

Yep. Prepare it like you would any piece of furniture.

I used to run a car repay business and we often had people come in to get their furniture sprayed (not recommended, far too expensive)
Rocky, if your going to use car spray paint, make sure you give the item being sprayed a rub down with fine sandpaper first so that the paint as a key to grip to.
Question Author
Excellent thanks all, I'll give it a good sanding first and prime it (it's black at the moment). Fingers crossed the colour is what I have in my head :)
I'd de-grease it 1st with meths before rubbing it down. You might have problems getting a decent finish using an aerosol. It'll be much better using a spray gun.
Question Author
Oh jeez, I haven't got a spray gun. I'm am quite good with an aerosol and know that it'll probably take a few thin coats to give a good cover.

Ah well, if it turns out crap, I'll just paint over it with some satinwood :)
not sure how big this sideboard is but preparation and completely grease/polish free is important also if possible warm the tin (safely !!) and the item being sprayed it will make for a better finish.
Just remember cars are painted in ovens or under heat lamps thats how the pros do it...hence the quality.
Rocky, if you are spraying it in the garden - bring yer washing in off the line first! doh!
There is nothing wrong with the spray paint, it is what is underneath that will probably cause problems. Car paint sprayed onto french polish or shellac laquer will give a craquelure effect although whether fine or coarse you will only know several days after spraying. If the furniture has ever been wax or silicone polished the result could be spectacular(ly awful). Even oil based paint may give an 'orange peel' or craquelure effect. If the original finish is a modern varnish then you may get away with it but try a small spot somewhere out of sight. My choice would be to rub the item of furniture down with 'flour' paper and have the colour made up in water based matt or satin acrylic. Acrylic paint has good adhesion and will not affect the underlying varnish of whatever kind.
Yes rocky - I used cans of spray paint on white satin and white leather shoes. Brilliant results.
Question Author
Right, I'm nipping down to Halfords now, where else can you get car spray paint in an aerosol?
have used car spray paint as nail varnish (inadvertantly) many times. I thought the metallic green was quite fetching but it did attract some funny looks
Most car accessory shops, rocky.
Rocky, you local car spairs shop would probably be cheaper than Halfords if they have the colour you want in a generic colour giant can.

Got it, Halfords had the exact colour I wanted, so I'm going to be the proud owner of a Champagne Gold Ford Sideboard Ghia once the weather warms up a bit. £6.49 a can as well, way cheaper than the decorative sprays in B&Q and the like.

Thanks for all the advice :)
Don't forget to post a photo ..
