Could anyone recommend a good bed? There are so many in the shops and you dont like to lay on them all , its too embarrassing, and anyway you have to lay on it all night before you discover if it is comfortable!  I have a bit of a bad back so want something firm (not too hard I have been told) Could anyone recommend a good make, not a cheapie but not Victoria Beckham prices either!  Thanks everyone

Don't think it's necessarily the bed, it's the mattress that's important. We got a pine bed with an orthopaedic mattress, which is brilliant. I'm sure any decent bed shop will sell you a bed and mattess separately, get out there and try them out!

judiewudie,

Have a look at this link:~

It may surprise you!

Very sound advice from these two.  We bought a new bed some years ago and the shop was extremely patient while we lazed around on their many beds and very helpful with advice on firmness, etc.

Decide what kind of base you want (divan or slatted) and size.  Then go on to what type of mattress you prefer.  We actually opted for two 2' 6" mattresses for our 5' kingsize base.  Much easier to turn (should be done regularly) and a darn sight easier to get up the stairs in the first place!  Also gives you the opportunity to have a different level of firmness for a partner (if you have one).  We went for Slumberland mattresses in the end, but on a completely different make of base.

Go to a reputable shop and if they get touchy, try another one - it's worth the time and effort to get a decent night's sleep.  Spend as much as you can comfortably afford - you spend a fair amount of time in bed so it pays to get it right for you.

It is definately the matress you need to concentrate on. Silent Night matresses are, in my experience, brilliant. I've had mine for nearly 15 years and it is still as good as new.
