Recharging Car Battery.

Is it ok to recharge a car battery using a normal charger whilst the battery is in the car?

NO!

With most cars made in the last few years it could cause a lot of electrics to be damaged.

It would help you to get better answers if you didn't keep your car details secret!

IIRC when the rescue service had to come out to my car as the battery wouldn't start it, they had some kind of voltage/current limiting device that allowed them to attach their power source with it all in situ. I didn't get the details though.

That stated I'm not sure why you'd want to keep a battery connected whilst charging. How difficult is it to disconnect and reconnect afterwards anyway ?

It's not the difficulty of removing the battery, it's that you will need the codes to reset the radio and perhaps other electrics..

I have a low amperage motorcycle charger which is safe to charge any cars but it would take a few days to charge a car battery

normal charging shouldnt cause a problem its when jump packs/ booster chargers are used to start a vehicle it can all go wrong,although to be honest i have never seen it happen.
What old geezer is refering to is a 'surge protector' something we also have to use when mig-welding a vehicle .

I have never disconnectd a battery to recharge it, and have never had a problem.

The problems people experience with booster packs that Chas refers to are usually caused by connecting the wrong way round.
