I have no problems propagating my pelargoniums from cuttings but after I have overwintered them although they look (reasonably) healthy they "shrink" where the stem emerges from the compost and have a scab like coating over it (usall about 1/2 long). Anybody know why ?

This happens to mine so just one of those things that happens when we do cuttings. Those in the shops in Spring were reared from seed. You'll probably have noticed yours are a lot stirdier for the first few months.
the scab acts as a seal ... just like a scab!they will have shrunk a little due to dehydration ..
A keen gardener told me to take cuttings in August and let them get away before the winter, then to be mean with food and water. Never had any bother.
