If when I'm bored I trawl through some of the old questions from months
ago, and I add an answer, and it is successful, why dosen't it appear in latest
posts?

Old posts do not appear after a given time (not sure how long) they are only useful if you subscribe to them.

The cut off point for old posts appearing in latest posts was, and probably still is, 30 days. The Ed mentioned extending it to six weeks but I don't know if that happened.
