I have tried home steamers, vax 6131 and nothing does credit to the cleaning of my carpets and especially my upholstery which is in dire need of cleaning. When I told a friend I was going to B & Q to hire their rug doctor she said don't other (she use to work there a few years ago) and said the customers were not impressed at all. I'm loathed to hire a man to do it ( I looked after an elderly relative and there is some staining and soiling I just can't remove, I appreciate I need extra help here can anyone suggest anything, that won't cost me an arm and a leg, I think industrial would probably be required. Thanks.

My husband is a self employed carpet and upholstery cleaner, any good professional will visit and tell you whether the stains are likely to come out and provide a no obligation quote. You would be surprised what stains can be removed if a good extraction machine is used.
i hired a rug doctor a few years ago now as i spilt a whole bottle of undiluted ribena on my hall carpet and i have to say i was very impressed with it.it got every bit out and brought my other carpets up good as new.also shared it with some friends as i had it over a weekend and they were very pleased with it too.
We have had chem dry do our carpets both here and in america and the service was excellent. Its not cheap. If you want DIY then consider buying a Bissell shampooer very good outcome, costs about as much as havng chem dry come in but you have the machine to do it again
we recently hired a rug doctor, our grandsons decided to draw tain lines on a beige carpet with green and dark blue wax crayons!........Worked a treat, be bought the shampoo and the stain buster spray, and there was not a trace, the carpet looked like new!...........
I bought the vax 6131 mainly for the kitchen hard floor. I slosh the cleaner on with a mop then suck it up. I find it is adequate on the carpets. For serious staining it is necessary to get down on your knees with the upholstery attachment. This enables you to get much closer to the problem. You can use the Vax carpet spray if you want but I find cold water with a dash of w/u liquid is just as good (in a spray bottle). Keep at it until most of the water is sucked up.

I like vax. I will keep the 6131 for the kitchen but have bought a dual v 124 uprightfor the carpets. It was bought on amazon in a deal I could not refuse! Ive yet to use it.
Some kind person on here told me about Rug Doctor cleaning liquid. I tried it in my own carpet cleaner and the carpets came up lovely. So I would recommend Rug doctor any time. x
