Memory foam effectiveness?

I can't afford a Tempur but have just bought a memory foam mattress. It has 12cm of memory foam and a further 8cm of different foam. However! They have just delivered me a different one which has 2cm soft memory foam, 7cm of memory foam and 11cm of other foam. This mattress has less memory foam than I wanted but is actually more expensive on the website. The company said to me that after 8cm, the memory foam starts to compact on itself and so 12cm is a bit pointless, and I would be better off with 8cm.
Is this true?! Or are they pulling a fast one?
Does anyone have a memory foam mattress with a top layer of memory foam and a lower layer of other foam (they come vacuum packed) and if so, how do you find it?! THANKS

I'd be suspicious that one is better off with less. I might possibly buy the idea that diminishing returns mean the extra bit is not so important.

Seems to me you have a right to get what you agreed to buy, and they have no right sending a substitute without clearing it with you first (do they hide reserving this 'right' in the small print somewhere ?).

IMO a few inches worth is sufficient but if you wish to demand you get what you paid for or a refund then I'd suspect you'd have a good case.
Had a memory foam mattress but it kept forgetting me
What's wrong with an ordinary mattress?
You wake up with more aches and pains with an "ordinary" mattress.
yes i have 4" of memory foam 2" of standard and yes it does compact eventually specially where you backside rests
to add yes it very comfortable
i'd never go back to ordinary type

Thanks- but what I really want to know is- is 9cm of memory foam BETTER than 12cm?! The man in the shop said it was but I don't see how that can be true!!
Doubtful, that 9 cm is better than 12. Tempur "wrote the book" on memory foam, go and see what their website says. Me I would be wanting what I had ordered!
