toilet in a vanity unit. It came together so items matched. He has fitted it all and secured it to the floor but we have a problem.? When you flush it and the water goes out you get a thump-thump sound.? It is driving me mad. Why is it doing this and will we just have to put up with it forever.? It is a 3 gallon cistern and 6, for low or high flush. Is there something we can do.?

lilac, The problem could be that the water pressure feeding the cistern is too high. Try turning the isolation valve down ( if one has been fitted ) to restrict the flow. If one has not been fitted, try turning the water down at the main stopcock.
Hope this helps.
Sorry, forgot to mention. If the water supply pipework to the cistern is not clipped/secured, this will also cause this problem.

Hi pilotlight, my husband has tried both things you have said but it has not made any difference. He has asked me to tell you it isnt the water pressure coming in but when the water goes out. As soon as you press the buttons to flush the water out you get a loud thump thump noise as it empties.
Anymore ideas would be very grateful.
Sorry lilac, the tank's empty, forgive the pun. Perhaps The Builder or Albags may be along anytime.
It sounds as if the diaphragm (older type, probably a lift valve now) is faulty, and is flapping up and down when it's operated to let the water out.
Probably have to get inside it to see.......... possibly replace it.
Ha ............... just as Pilot was typing ............ ;o)
The Builder, its only a 3 gallon cistern, nowhere big enough for anybody to get inside it!! ;)

Ok, i'll get my coat.
I think you mean 3 or 6 litre, not gallons.

If it's a new WC check with the installation instructions that the flushing mechanism has been assembled properly.

Many thanks to all. The Builder ..it is a new toilet. and Dodger there wasnt any instruction on installations. Any tips please.? OH by the way just got laughed at by hubby when I told him I had written gallons.!! dah!!
Without knowing what type of flushing mechanism you've got it's difficult to say. Did you buy it locally? If so go back to the supplier and ask if there are any installation instructions.
