how long would you advise keeping bank statements?

if you are self-employed or fill in a tax return: 7 years.

if not, click the box for online statements and after you check them, don't worry about it.
I usually keep mine for 12 months and then bin em, mainly because theyre fairly easy to get copies of in the unlikely event you might need to refer to them again.
There is no need to keep them at all nowadays. A lot of people have gone paperless and just view their statements online.
You can claim reimbursement for overpaid tax for up to six years. Could be best to retain the proof of income and outgoings for that time.
But the tax man can go back further than six years...
About 20 years after your demise.
Aways have proof to show, and let your descendants have the same.
