I'm a lazy gardener so I  tend to go for the easiest option.  My standby is Vitax Q4 for just about everything - or a diluted feed of  liquid Tomorite works well if nothing else is available.
I use Miracle-Gro. If you don't feel like diluting the concentrate or using the hose apparatus, they now do it in a green bottle ready diulted. All you do is pour a capful onto the plant roots every so often.

Last year I bought a few bags of well rotted horse manure from a nearby stables. I just turned up with some sacks and a shovel and asked nicely! It cost me about 1 a bag. After spreading that on the garden and forking it well in during the spring, my garden was like a bloody jungle last summer! Every plant was huge! it worked in my tubs and hanging baskets too. I was very impressed. I have just spread a load more on the beds for this year, so that the rain can wash it in. My only note of caution, I stress that it needs to be well rotted, not fresh stuff, this has a lovely tilth and is not at all smelly. Dont spread it too thickly and fork it well into the topsoil, its harder work than just spraying some chemical or other but you only have to do it once and it will work for the whole summer. The straw etc in it also improves the texture of your soil which is helpful.
