hi there, i am currently trying to move home, the house im interested in and have been proceeding with the purchase of i have just found out from the coal authority has a mine shaft at the bottom end of the garden, id guess about 10-15 metres from theback door of the house.

i have no clue what to do, the solicitor did say that they were informing the mortgage company about it but we havent heard anything else from them.

we have a meeting with the solicitor tomorrow, just wondered if anyone had any experience of this kind of thing

half of me wants to buy, half of me says this could be an expensive mistake that we may not be able to sell on in the future

help please any advice appreciated!!

If I really really really wanted that property then I would be getting some independent advice from a surveyor qualified to give that advice, given the particular "problem" you have.

I would not be completing the purchase until I had that advice and considered what I was being told. I might well then have to reduce my offer price.

But I would probably walk away from the transaction.
I think you just have to do a Googe search on 'mine shafts in garden' and it throws up enough results that it would put me off buying.

Here's one from last year....

yup, very long bargepole, you at one end, house at the other
Even if you get over the (many) problems, physical, legal and financial in buying this house;just what is going to happen if and when you want to sell it again?

I would run a mile from such a property, unless it was VERY cheap, and even then I would think twice(or three times)!
