We need to replace our windows and I was wondering if any of you have had this done recently. I want to know if it will be really messy as I have just finished decorating a couple of rooms.

Shouldn't really affect your internal decoration, except perhaps the edges where the window frames and sills meet with your internal walls..... Easy enough to touch-up afterwards. A reputable firm you require.... Best wishes....Ron.

Thanks Ron. Your posts are always lovely!
Got your message. What a nice compliment you have given me.

Hope everything goes well. If you are planning for pvc windows make sure that the glazing seals are internally fitted for greater security; ( Glass can be removed from external seals.) Bevel edged internal seals we have.

Hope everything turns out o.k...............R.
Check with your installer for references. We have had 2 lots of replacement windows installed at 2 different properties . The first made no mess at all the second attacked our walls with a huge drill and made an incredible mess.Unfortunately we were out at the time(another lesson learnt) The mess was already made. We did deduct some from our bill because of the mess but it hardly covered the cost of the making good.

Maclarencat please give me the names of the compnaies you used.
Hello. The good firm were Coral windows in Wakefield. The bad fitters were a local company in Cornwall they were cheap but as I said not recommended
maclarencat has certainly indicated the gamble one takes with the replacement of windows.

We were very lucky to have had a local firm who did a really good job. Perhaps this was because we kept tabs on things as work progressed and made sure the workmen were on our side.( A few pounds in their pockets, along with tea, coffee and biscuits etc. works wonders.)

However, although we had a 20yr guarantee, the firm went bankrupt a few months after installing our windows.

You pays your money and takes your choice!!!.......Best wishes....Viv & Ron.

I'm getting quotes at the moment. I will let you know how it goes!
A couple points to check-up on.
1. Make sure that the fitters mechanically fit the windows to the window reveals. That is, drill & plug them, not fit them with expanding foam only.
2. If they loosen any plaster, make sure they re-plaster it, not stick it back with mastic.
Had all ours completed in an afternoon - scarcely any mess at all, and that was with putting 10 windows and two doors in. I was also bothered about having to redecorate, but didn't have to, not even round the edges. Good luck!

Where do you live taperface and who fitted your windows?
Hi Crapmemory
I am in exactly the same situation as yourself.Just decorated a couple of rooms...and now,my landlady is putting in double-glazing for me...desperately needed...but what bad timing !!!!`

Have you had your's done yet...was there much mess?
Everybody tells there won't be...but...I find this hard to believe.Mine is a very old house and the walls are all crumbly,so you can see where I am coming from...

Am interested how you have gone on.
