I have just moved house and the new water supplier is stating that I have to have a water meter. Does anyone know if this is the case or can I insist on a normal non-metered tariff? Thanks

Is it a new house? What water company? Was the meter already there when you moved in?
Are you somewhere where there is a water scarcity order like Folkstone or Dover .

In this case they can force you to have one

I'm getting a meter, so I can only speak for Thames water. All new builds have, for a while, been fitted with a meter, and nothing can be done about that. Any old builds fitted with a meter have a period of grace in which you can change your mind BUT if the house goes to new owners in the meantime, the meter stays.
From what I hear (and I don't have a water meter) all the people how have one say it was the best thing they ever did, so go for it!!

Hi

Thanks for all the responses. It's not a new house and I am moving from Thames Water to Three Valleys Water. I'm not aware of there being a water scarcity in the area.

As eyeshade suggests it may not be a negative move - just something to get used to.

Thanks again
This is from the Three Valleys Water website

Please note that we now install a meter at properties in our supply region whenever a property has changed occupier. If we have installed a meter under these circumstances, there is no option to change back to non-metered charges. For more information on compulsory meters, click here
If you qualify to change back to non-metered charges and would like to apply, please email us and we will send you a form to complete.
you prob better to get a meter fitted
then you only pay for water used
water co's want everyone on a meter
to make people change the charges for non-metered prop is far more than one with so cost of water is covered
with a meter you only pay for waht you use
