As long as there has been a society, the notion of something being meant 'humorously' and then not received as such, has been an on-going argument.
Personally, I think it adds insult to injury to suggest that someone who takes offence at something lacks a sense of humour, as well as being in possession of a thin skin.
Is a better position not to say that a point was offered with humour, and not intended to offend, and then offer an apology for any offence taken, although as advised, it was not intended?
To denigrate someone for not sharing a sense of humour smacks of an arrogant attitude lacking in empathy. We all are offended by different things said and done - taking a huffy sense of superiority is not an attractive character trait.
