Thin plaster interior walls

I would like to hang things up on the wall using plugs. When I previously attempted this the drill decided to go through the plaster board. Does anyone have any way round this problem? I would appreciate any advice from experienced site users.

screwfix.com and B&Q do a range of cavity fixings especially made for this purpose.
