My laptop has managed to change something on its own, could anyone please help me restore it, I'm a bit befuddled about what I'm looking for in settings.

When I open my laptop lid, before I put in my password I always had a photograph, usually landscapes from around the world with the password entry box in the middle, a MS feature that I selected at set up. It has reverted to jut a standard bright blue wavy screen. What is this called - screensaver, wallpaper, background, theme?? There is so much in settings I don't know where to start. Display, personalisation??

it's Windows 11.

Try settings - personalisation
Is your user name the same? Does the password work? if so just log in right click on a spare area of the screen and select "personalise".

Thank you. The name I was looking for was lock screen.
Got it back now via personalise - lock screen - Windows spotlight
Wallpaper is a (usually still, but not always) picture you put in the background of your screen view. A theme is a whole load of settings, inc. wallpaper, that you can set up together. A screensaver, not as vital since monitors changed, but still useful to indicate the computer is on, is a continuously changing pattern that shows when you have left the computer on but aren't actively using it. Originally run to avoid any single part of the phosphorus screen showing brightly and burning off the phosphor, thus leaving a permanent unwanted image.
