when growing chives do you have to cut off the purple heads or are these edible

Chive flowers are edible :-)

thank you i have been cutting them off and throwing them away, some of the growth is very hard are these edible also

use the harder bits to flavour soups that are going to be whizzed in a blender, or put in stock that will be strained anyway

I I didnt know you could eat the flowers.What would you do with them food wise?

I love chives -ive just grabbed a bunch and scoffed them whilst watering the garden:)

If you cut off the flowers anyway, you will get more growth - otherwise the plant puts all its energies in to making the flower and seeds instead of growing more greenery.
