I have just, today, purchased a Breaburn apple tree from the local garden centre. I want to grow it in a container as there is only one position in my garden where it would get most sun and there is no soil in the area.
I would like any information as to growing it in a container, i.e. feeding, size of container, pruning to keep it rather small etc.

What rootstock has it been grafted onto?.

Fruit trees are normally taken as cuttings and then grafted onto a specially grown root. It is this root that determines how big it will grow.

Hopefully you told someone you wanted to grow it in a container and they sold you one with a dwarf rootstock like M27 or M9.

There's a little article here about apple trees in containers.

Try and find the rootstock on the label and look it up on the internet. If it's going to grow big, give the nursery a ring and tell them that you wanted to grow it in a container and see if they'll exchange it for a dwarfing one.

Thanks for that, the rootstock on this tree is M26 which, according to the label, is semi dwarf. It may not be the best, the garden centre does not have the ones you suggest but I will give it a go and see what happens. I do have a space where it could go in the garden, if need be, but I have just turned it over to vegetables.
