I cant help you with why Bluebird, but my Roundup pump thingy did the same thing...we went to Wilkinsons...bought a pump action plain spray bottle and transfered the contents.. works a treat.. and I think the new sprayer was only a couple of pounds. Hope that helps .. Mrs C x
Made-up weedkiller doesn't last forever....you need fresh stuff.
Perhaps the fine nozzle has also blocked so it's not able to deliver a fine mist? Needs cleaning perhaps.
oh, and perhaps the sealing-ring on the pump's piston has deteriorated with age?

Well thank you all for ideas, will look tomorrow when weather is a bit better. I bought the sprayer because I can't bend very well (old age) and I like the pump but hope I can make it last more than 1 year.
This can often happen Bluebird, due to sediment settling and clogging the nozzle.
The last time this problem happened to mine, I donned my rubber gloves, then set about unscrewing the nozzle and giving it a good scrub and a few knocks n' taps and it was going as right as rain!
