How big is your pond? I tend to clear mine out completely every couple of years either very very early spring or mid autumn. I also run a pump with a filter system which takes out the debris, it needs cleaning out every so often.

Hi woofgang,my pond is approx 8ft diameter,i do already have a pump with filte, but I am just wary about using the pond vac till I do more thinkink and research.i cant risk harming the frogs and newts especially tiny baby newts.thnx for your reply I maay wait till autumn and try your method.cheers jintymac.
I also used to empty mine yearly and scrub it...even with a pump algae builds up over time...
Why don't you use an old piece of net curtain (If you have a piece fine enough to pick up the dust without also scooping up the residents) stretched over the end of the Vac? Fold it a couple of times, just to be sure.
I always kept a long handled, fine mesh net handy, I found that it was easy to be selective in what I scooped out and caused less disruption and disturbance to any resident pond life.
At the outset of Autumn the whole pond was netted to cut down on the amount of leaves falling in.
