just wondering if this which is also sometimes known as catnip or catmint is similar is smell to the mint we get in the garden

No - nepeta is nothing like garden mint. You can't eat it. Cats can.
Quite a different scent...and cats DO go wild for it !
I haven't got any nepeta left, Black Spot has sat on it and crushed it to bits. None of them take any notice of garden mint.

sorry I should of said that I know its not edible but thought that they maybe smelled similar, sorry for the confusion
No, definitely not. Depending on which smells you like, nepeta stinks. Cats love it, and come in reeking of the stuff!
I have six hills giant planted boxy...seems to be more robust and bears up to their attentions...
Murray, I'd give it a bash... a 5 kilo cat determined to lie in it is quite a deterrent!
