I have just had my kitchen plastered and the guy who did it built up my windowsill for me(it was uneven). I am going to paint it at the weekend, but my question is this; I don't want to tile the windowsill so is there anything I can put over the paint to make it water resistant?

Simply use a couple of coats of gloss paint. Make sure you use an oil-based type. (Look on the can. If it says to use turps or brush cleaner to clean up, it will be OK. Don't use any paint that says to clean up using water, as these paints will deteriorate if the sill gets damp. Oil-based paint will give you a waterproof finish to the sill.

Is there any other option as I am painting the rest of the kichen with emulsion?
Hi crapmemory, both dulux and crown make a emulsion that is for kitchens and bathrooms. It is not waterproof but is a lot more water resistant than the usual emulsions on the market. If you are going to be putting things on the sill the vinyl silk would probably be more suitable as it is easier to wipe without marking. As you say you have just had the room replastered the walls should be fairly flat. I wouldn't use a silk finish on very uneven surfaces as it shows up all the marks on them.

Thanks for all your replies. I have already got a Dulux colour chart for the kitchen paint but I didn't know if it would be good enough for the windowsill. I shall give it a try!
