Yes.
I disagree.

I believe the wording of the law says something like 'suitably qualified person' NOT mentioning CORGI (or similar) explicitly. And that's only in relation to the 'gas plumbing'. As yet, there are no legal restrictions on who could do the 'water plumbing'.

But if you're thinking of installing the gas yourself, or getting your mate to do it - don't! It's not worth the risk - get a professional in.
It is against the law for any non-CORGI-registered person to carry out work on any gas appliances and/or flues.

HSE: 'Domestic Gas Health & Safety'.
Well, that isn't actually 'the law', is it?

There will be an act of parliament covering it. Can you find that? Doesn't the HSE guidelines/recommendations give the legal reference?
That didn't take much finding.

The legislation is at http://www.opsi.gov.uk/si/si1998/98245102.htm

The relevant bit is Part B, Section 3, Paragraph 1.

Though paragraph 3 expands on this to say that no employee or self-employed person can (legally) do gas fitting unless the HSE say they are competent to do so. Which - I'm sure - will equate to being CORGI registered.

(You can also see that the word 'CORGI' appears nowhere in the legislation)

So you can do it yourself (if you're daft enough) without being CORGI, but no one doing it for you, for money, should be doing so without being CORGI.

I agree with Casto but the actual term is competent persons so if a qualified plumber installed a boiler then had CORGI registered plumber to commission it would that still be legal and be covered by public liabilities depending on the insurance company of course because at the end of the day I think a lot of these HSE issues revolve round trades doing then others testing as it does in the electrical industry HTH Tez
sorry Catso
It is an offence under the gas safety and use regulations for any person to work on a gas appliance or installation, unless deemed competent to do so. In the UK that means you HAVE to be a CORGI registered engineer. You cannot get someone else to do it and then get a CORGI man to pass it. In fact we have to report any work that has not been carried out by a CORGI fitter to the HSE as an illegal installation !!!
if your corgi registered, does that mean you can legally go dogging!!!!
