extending an ankle strap

Does anyone know how difficult it woud be to extend an ankle strap on a pair of sandals ? they aren't leather. I was wondereing about taking the buckle of and legnthening it that way with a double piece of elastic. Would I ruin the shoes? should I leave it too the experts? has anyone ever done this?

Would suggest you go to the local cobbler (shoe repairer ) as
they will have the right tools , and do a better job .
