Our Poterton boiler and Boiler Mate 2000 had broken down.
British Gas quoted £700 to repair the parts in the Boiler Mate.
Is it worth repairing these Boiled Mate or get a complete installation. British Gas advised us to have a new installation as they say if we spend £700 now, then it could be the Poterton boiler next as it is 15 years old.

We are not sure which route to take now, repair the Boiler Mate or a new installation.
Any thoughts will be appreciated. We got no heating in the house now so we need to get it sorted very quickly.

No real knowledge but know companies are keen to push profitable replacements rather than fix.

If the boiler went later, couldn't you use the boilermate with a new boiler anyway ?
get in a few corgi registered plumbers in, and get their opinions..

Old_Geezer, I think you're right that having the Boiler Mate fixed now and then if the Poterton boiler does break down we could get it replaced.

Fender32,

We have talked to a Boiler Mate repair specialist and they kind of saying Boiler Mate boiler are a cash cow system and its expensive to repair and I asked for a quote over the phone assuming the replacement of a PCB and two pumps. They basically says £700 is about right for labour and parts.
Potterton were good
we had one for 22 y

yours is worn out - time to think of new
( BG are expensive - the quoted me £5k and I got a local plumber to pu t in one that worked for £900 )

BG also said - we will rip your kitchen out - so you will need a new one. I didnt use them
your boiler's dead mate
think of burying it
Lol at Peter, but he is right. Get a new one called MAIN. They're great.
Replace if you can afford it.
Don't go with British Gas. They put in a new gas boiler a couple of doors down for an old lady and charged her nearly £3000 ( I saw the receipts) The same boiler cost around £ 950 trade price. Go to an independant Gas Corgi Registered Plumber and get a quote. I would go for new, fixing old boilers is throwing good money after bad.
You have a boiler to heat the water, and a thermal store (Boilermate) to provide mains pressure hot water.

I think it's just as well to combine the two and replace them with a modern condensing combi.

A couple of really good and reliable ones to think about are "Ideal" and "Grant". Around £3,000 should do it. This should include the inevitable fiddling around with flues and pipework.
As TB says...the Ideal Vogue is a very good boiler (now that the company has had a re-structure)...you can get up to 10 years warranty..good flow rates and a stainless heat exchanger.
