My front teak wood door was previously painted over the years with teak or mahogany wood stain. I now intend to try and change to a gloss maroon type colour paint. The wood on the door is perfectly sound.
Any advise of what primer or undercoat i should use before putting on the gloss would be appreciated.

Give it a good ol' rough up with sandpaper - this will enable the next layer to bond well. Then any primer for exterior paintwork will do. Then maybe sand again and prime again. Several coats of gloss sanded down between coats will do you excellent service.
