Boiler Now Not Giving Hot Water

Jo, don't forget that the 1.5 pressure is only in the radiator system, which is a sealed arrangement.
Your hot water is separate. It does sound as though your exchanger is bunged up. I wonder, in your case, if it's possible to get at the water connections to the exchanger and flush it through before you order a new one.

Can you give us the make & model?

I've had a read-up Jo. It seems to be quite possible to de-scale and de-sludge the exchanger either in situ, or by removing it. Results are reported to be very good.

One thing I must add though, is that there is some disagreement as to whether this is a DIY job. Some GasSafes say go ahead and flush, but others maintain that since gas connections are involved, it must be done by a GasSafe.

Use your own discretion here. If you can flush in situ without touching any gas connections, then try it.
As with so many things, it's a grey area as to whether it should be done by a GasSafe.

Thankyou...the builder....i also tried to find out about it , the other half has a plumber friend anyway though not gas safe. Between them they are quite competant and were willing to remove the exchanger so we will see what they think is best. Thankgod i am staying at parents over christmas !!!
