What actually happened to the Picts?

in history books i have read the Picts go from being feared barbarians by the Romans to never being mentioned, only the scots are mentioned? did it just become a general term or what actually happened?

That's a good wiki article, Count AS. I haven't read it in detail but it seems to miss one point - namely the Scots were the Irish settlers that moved into the land north of the wall in the chaotic years after the Roman collapse. Sort of like the later Orange settlers, but in reverse.
The loss of the Pictish language is significant, as this suggests to me a proportionate rise in numbers of people speaking a different language ie Scots Gaelic. And I think this might be the core of your enquiry ie did they die out, get killed off, or just intermarry with new settlers who were greater in number.....so only DNA will tell us how many modern scots have Pictish descent.
