I have always thought of it as a Scottish name.
My Saunders are from Herefordshire.

My father was Jack Saunders (John), he thought they originated in Wales but was not sure. Thanks for the opinions. I intend to start a search soon, (wish me luck!)

Thank you Jackthehat, appreciate the kind offer. I read your attached link Jno, very informative, Alexander and the Normans...my two favourite periods in history....I am spurred on. (driven even) N.
saunders is a surname that appears in the parish registers of glasbury brecon wales, cardigan, carmarthan, flint and glamorgan back to the 1600s in all those counties.
