Hi everyone, I would be grateful if someone could explain to me why it is considered 'bad form'  to put a stamp on an envelope upside down. (which I did by accident) and it caused a bit of a fuss. thanks in advance

Evidently placing a stamp, bearing the likeness of the Queen, upside down on an envelope is considered an act of treason.

You too Buttons. . .glad you didn't get sent to the Tower! :o)

When I was having driving lessons my instructor told me he used to know someone who was a Communist and always put his stamps on his envelopes upside down ... At the time I thought it was more likely an Anarchist would do something like that.

Its putting the Image of the Queen upside down that is taken as a sign of disrespect

Its been around for a long time, in 1850 or thereabouts there's a cover of mixed stamps, South America and British, with the Penny red upside down and everyone know what that was meant to signify

It's because postal workers are lower class and have a hard time reading as it is...   No, just kidding, just like to say this post answered my question already. Thanks :)  Wonder how many elderly do it by accident.. say, forgot to put glasses on ?
Hello Buttons, when I started work, I can remember being told to always put my 'pound notes' in my purse the right way up and never put the Queen in upside-down. I still do it to this day!
Apparently it is also an insult to write the address in red ink

In the USA if a stamp is put on an envelope upside down, it means that the sender loves you.  : )
