Shepherd's Pie commemorates Jesus' (the Great Shepherd) Last Supper with the Disciples in which the substance and elements of the Pie become the body and blood of Jesus.
Not entirely sure about that Sludge. Both my Grandmothers were a wealth of little anecdotes like that and particularly with a religious bent to them, it's likely that they would have known that one. So although I've not heard it myself doesn't mean it's not true. However cottage pie is beef mince covered with mashed tatties, shepherd's pie is lamb or mutton mince covered with mashed tatties, somehow I believe that is a more plausible one.
Yes I'd agree there. Cottage - Beef and Shepherds - Lamb.
Quite agree, but it is the historical background which is requested, not the principal ingredients.
May I ask, archbishop, doesn't your recipe rather confirm Sludge's reply - the Holy Lamb?

Hadia My reply was not a recipe by any stretch of the imagination.

As for the "Holy Lamb" business, well maybe but I'm quite happy that because of what shepherds do they had a ready source of meat, ie Lamb.

TRANSFIGURATION through a shepherd's pie!!!! It will never be the same again.

Thanks for your help, Sludge!

Sludge You actually think they had Shepherds Pie at the Last Supper. Potatoes were unknown in in that part of the world 2000 years ago. And certainly no Worcestshire sauce.
I THINK ORIGINALLY THAT SHEPHERDS PIE WAS A TYPE OF PASTY THAT THE SHEPHERD TOOK OUT WITH HIM FOR HIS MIDDAY MEAL. COTTAGE PIE, AS THE NAME SUGGESTS, WAS A POTATO TOPPED PIE MADE FROM LEFTOVERS AND BAKED IN THE OVEN FOR SUPPER.
I heard that shepherd's pie was eaten by shepherds as the ingredients were available while on the job.
