Invisible string and a magic carpet
He wears a harness under the big baggy jumper, which is attached to two thin steel cables (similar to piano wire).  The background has verticle curtains and there is smike in the atmosphere to hide the cables.
The cables are operated by assistance off-stage.
It's been done for years in Peter Pan pantomimes and the movies.
smoke not smike!!
