A foreign lorry driver crashes into a people carrier and wipes out a young family of 5 people. He gets 3 years. Two men near here are caught selling pouches of tobacco (been doing it a long time though) and get 8 years each. So remember, if you wipe a family out you're gonna get your legs smacked, but don't dare FK with Customs & Excise or the courts will get REALLY mad at you.

Well with this twisted goverment it does make sense to them 10CS
okay 10C point taken - so post your tariffs for sentencing...
erm..............is the correct answer Alan Hansen ?
I have always said that bigger sentences are given for stealing money than taking a life, the judicial system in this country is very flawed. My daughter is at the latter end of getting her licence to be a solicitor and she is amazed at the loop holes in criminal law, but other sections of the law system are water tight.

Tonyted, you say the driver made one disastrous mistake.

As an HGV driver myself I can see into these foreign truckers cabs, and I have seen some of them watching films on laptops as they go past.

The crash was on a long straight stretch. It wasn't just a quick flick of the eyes off the road - he wasn't looking out properly at all.
I have driven on enough motorways to witness the complete incompetence of HGV drivers. They drive too close, they intimidate car drivers. and in my opinion are some of the the most dangerious drivers on the roads.
Having a little trouble locating a link to the report of two men each receiving 8 year sentences for selling pouches of tobacco. I keep running into this tale of "industrial scale" smuggling (72 million cigarettes and 68.5 kilos of hand rolling tobacco = over 11million in duty evasion) for which 7 men received a total of 14⅓ years - the ringleader earning 5 years and his son 3 years.
