Could anyone tell me what the creeping barrage was and how it worked? Also how it turned the disaster of the Battle of the Somme around would be really helpful.

Thanks, but i looked at that and it was quite helpful but i still don't really understand how it worked. I need quite a bit of detail.
My understanding is this:

A barrage would start and land say 400 yards ahead of allied troops it would then extend itself as the troops walked behind it "mopping" up the enemy.

So basicaly as the troops went forward the barrage prceeded them at a distance of 400yds.
Another explanation here.
